14-year-old Amina and her struggle to find food

While driving with a friend in Ghana to Mampong Babies Home, we picked up an elderly blind woman and her granddaughter (Amina), who happened to be going to Mampong as well. We found out that when she doesn't have school, 14-year-old Amina escorts her grandma to Mampong on Wednesdays to beg for alms. Granny told us that Wednesday is the market day at Mampong so that’s the day they usually go there, hoping to make some money to buy food. It’s a 17-mile journey from their village so she said that getting transport to Mampong from the remote wayside we picked them from is their hardest hurdle. Listening to the sad tale and their predicament was heart-wrenching. After we dropped them off, we gave them some money and the look on their faces made the chance encounter with them one of the most gratifying moments of our visit.
